Welcome to Powers Street Cats and Little Furry Friends adoption site. We were created last June, 2010, due to the overwhelming amount of feral cats in NYC. And especially on the block of our street. There are an estimated 750,000 cats and kittens roaming the streets in all five boroughs of New York. But with the help of the New York City Feral Cat Initiative and their TNR (trap-neuter-return) program the number of feral cats is reducing.
All of the kittens previously featured here were the offspring of the feral cats on my block. They were rescued by PSC due to poor health and injuries which if ignored would have end up dying. After months of recovery, they all regained their health and eventually adopted to loving homes for. Please take some time reading their bios and stories below. PSC is progressively making efforts to keep the feral cats safe in this neighborhood. To date, 45 cats/kittens have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated and 12 adopted to forever homes. And that is just within our one block radius. Check back frequently for updates on these kittens and our progress on Powers St TNR missions. Thanks for visiting!

TNR Project

Powers Street Trap-Neuter-Return Project

September 2010

(Phase One)
TRAPPING
Prior to our first night of trapping we all had about a month of preparation. After all of us were officially certified feral cat trappers we began planning our project. We had a bake sale fundraiser to help cover most of the costs for the cats and the prepping for our cat wrangling adventures...
The first night we set out with several traps along my block, within minutes we actually trapped our first cat! We figured, this is going to be easy! However, the next one wasn't trapped for awhile. Overall, our first night was a success, we trapped several cats, ones we never expected! Two were parents of the kittens we have at home. With our first night a success we set out for 2 more nights of wrangling and one very early morning. With our last night upon us before Clinic Day we had 2 females left to trap, one was a kitten left alone in a demolished construction site. And after unsuccessfully being able to trap the last female on my block, (she just stared at us all morning long) we set out a drop trap for her on our last evening. Hours went by, and at last around 9pm we trapped her.
Overall we wrangled 18 cats on my block for our first TNR project!!! We also had a successful adoption from one very friendly cat we trapped, Newman O.

CLINIC DAY
Chris and I woke up very early this day to prep all the cats for their clinic day...
Every cat was successfully spayed or neutered and vaccinated for FVRCP and Rabbies and also was given Revolution, a flea treatment.

(Phase Three)
RETURN and RELEASE
All the cats were very happy to be back where they now can live more comfortable lives. We checked back a few hours later to find a few of them cuddling together.

THE CATS
While our efforts continue on Powers St to help control the population/sicknesses/injuries of these cats, I have been trying to document each of them if they are willing. Below are a few from our first project from September.
Since September we have continued in aiding the cats around Powers St. To date, (Dec '10), the Powers St Cat Rescue has successfully helped 23 cats and 8 kittens (front page of blog). And have adopted 6 to loving homes.
